The output files 1404 may include different combinations of models defined by one or more STL files in a format and/or arrangement that is most suitable for use by the patient-specific device design apparatus 450. For example, for one procedure certain bone models may be active models 1316 while other models are context models 1318. Accordingly, the definitions of the models in the different STL files (e.g., output files 1404) may be customized for a particular surgical procedure. For example, suppose the surgical procedure is a Lapidus, the patient-specific device design apparatus 450 may coordinate with the segmentor 1020 such that active models 1316 are in one STL file while all context models 1318 are in a second different file. Such an organization of the output files 1404 (e.g., STL files) may facilitate operation of the patient-specific device design apparatus 450 using its set of work instructions 1040 and/or workflow 1050.

Once generated, the segmentor 1020 may send the output files 1404 to the computing device 902 and/or the computing device 902 may retrieve the output files 1404 from the segmentor 1020. The patient-specific device design apparatus 450 is configured to organize the output files 1404 within one or more storage devices 914 for subsequent use by the patient-specific device design apparatus 450 to generate a patient-specific device.

Those of skill in the art will appreciate that the output files 1404 may be organized in a variety of ways so long as the patient-specific device design apparatus 450 is able to locate and access the necessary output files 1404 when needed for completing of a workflow 1050. In one embodiment, the output files 1404 for a particular patient may be placed within a designated folder of a file system organized on the storage device 914. The workflow 1050 may be configured to read and/or retrieve these files from the same designated folder when executing the workflow 1050.

Advantageously, the patient-specific device design apparatus 450 can complete the steps to determine the set of medical imaging 1030, configured the segmentor 1020, and/or organize the output files 1404 as needed and/or as part of a set of work instructions 1040 and/or workflow 1050. Alternatively, or in addition, the patient-specific device design apparatus 450 may complete these steps all in one batch process that initiates during non-working hours, or an initial shift) and completes before a user 1002 is available to operate the patient-specific device design apparatus 450 to design a patient-specific device during a subsequent shift. In this manner, the methods, processes, and/or operations of the present disclosure can be scaled to enable patient-specific devices to be generated for hundreds or thousands of customers on each shift.

For example, an apparatus may design the patient-specific resection guide that creates an osteotomy in the bone model that enables movement of the bone model to the correction position, as described above. Advantageously, embodiments of the systems, methods, and apparatuses of the present disclosure are configured to enable a user and/or a surgeon to reposition bone models virtually from an original position to a new position to prepare for a planned procedure. The bones models are in the same position relative to each other as the bones of the patient. In contrast to some existing surgical techniques, the present disclosure enables a user or surgeon to move the model bones first to a new desired location and based on that new location design a patient-specific device that facilitates one or more osteotomies that enable this repositioning. Conventional techniques move a patient’s bones intraoperatively and then perform one or more osteotomies. With the present disclosure, the osteotomies are performed before surgery and virtually and the new position is used as a guide or reference, a reference feature, for designing and/or fabricating one or more aspects of a patient-specific device. Furthermore, the virtual osteotomies of model bones, enable movement of the bone modes by a surgeon to simulate a fusion of the bones and/or other repositioning and/or rotation without interference from bone material that is to be removed in a subsequent surgical procedure.

Those of skill in the art will appreciate that embodiments of the system disclosed herein can be used on humans and animals and on bones that are relatively small in comparison to other bones of the body (e.g., bones of the foot and hand). Advantageously, the embodiments of the system seek to minimize the number of fasteners or pins placed within the bones of a patient by planning a surgical procedure such that pins or fasteners placed in one stage are and/or can be reused in subsequent stages. Consequently, pins initially deployed can remain in the bone or bone fragment as instruments are deployed and/or subsequent stages of the surgical procedure are performed.

Advantageously, because the present disclosure uses a bone model of the patient’s bones the sizes, dimensions, lengths and configurations of the components of the example systems can each be changed, adapted, revised, and/or customized to meet the needs and/or preferences of the patient and/or surgeon. Advantageously, using the apparatus, systems, and/or methods of the present disclosure the surgeon may have a preoperative plan that identifies which specific bone screw (length, width, diameter, thread, pitch, etc.) to use for the fasteners.

Conventionally, correction methods, systems, and/or instrumentation for a condition such as, for example, a bunion and/or a hallux valgus, face several challenges. One example is how to cut the bone such that the cut faces have a desired angle in relation to each other. Advantageously, the present disclosure can address many, if not all, of these challenges to assist a surgeon in performing the surgical procedure and improve the quality of patient care and outcomes.
