As used herein, a "rail" refers to a structure that is longer than the structure is wide. In certain embodiments, a rail may have a cross-section that resembles, is similar to, and/or matches a capital letter "I" in a serif typeface. A rail may be made from a variety of materials including, but not limited to, metal, plastic, ceramic, wood, fiberglass, acrylic, carbon, biocompatible materials, biodegradable materials or the like. Often a rail is made from plastic due to its lower expense, strength and durability. A rail may also be formed of any biocompatible materials, including but not limited to biocompatible metals such as Titanium, Titanium alloys, stainless steel alloys, cobalt-chromium steel alloys, nickel-titanium alloys, shape memory alloys such as Nitinol, biocompatible ceramics, and biocompatible polymers such as Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) or a polylactide polymer (e.g. PLLA) and/or others.
A rail may be coupled to another component or integrated with and/or form part of another component or structure. In certain embodiments, a rail may be configured or arranged to support another structure that may translate along, slide along, or otherwise move in relation to the rail. In certain embodiments, one rail may have a corresponding opposite rail such that the two rails for a pair of rails. The pair of rails may cooperate to support another component or structure as that structures moves in relation to the pair of rails.
