"Application programming interface (API)" refers to an interface, boundary, specification, protocol, schema, contract, or other defined mechanism that enables communication, interaction, and/or data exchange between software components, hardware components, systems, services, modules, processes, and/or computational entities. An application programming interface may define callable functions, procedures, methods, endpoints, message formats, request-and-response structures, data schemas, authentication mechanisms, configuration parameters, streaming interfaces, event-driven interfaces, or the like and may operate locally, remotely, synchronously, asynchronously, directly, indirectly, statically, dynamically, or in distributed computing environments. An application programming interface may facilitate invocation of functionality, retrieval and/or submission of data, execution of commands, orchestration of services, and/or coordination of system behavior. Synonyms include API, service interface, programmatic interface, service endpoint, integration interface, callable interface, communication interface, or the like.
