"Semantic assignment" refers to an association, mapping, classification, labeling, designation, indexing, allocation, or other linkage between an item of content and a semantic domain based on semantic, contextual, functional, relational, structural, probabilistic, operational, or rule-based criteria. A semantic assignment may be singular or plural, deterministic or probabilistic, and may be determined automatically, manually, collaboratively, iteratively, probabilistically, deterministically, or otherwise and may be subject to confirmation, modification, override, or refinement by a human reviewer. Synonyms include domain assignment, category assignment, classification assignment, semantic mapping, contextual allocation, domain designation, or the like.
