“Engagement angle” refers broadly to an angular orientation associated with engagement between a working portion of a tool and a target material or surface. An engagement angle may be defined between a tooth, cutting element, cutting feature, abrading feature, bone-engagement feature, cutting face, working surface, foot, or other working portion of the tool and one or more reference features. A reference feature may include a longitudinal axis of the tool, another tool axis, a reference axis or plane, a surface or portion of the tool, or the target material or surface. Accordingly, an engagement angle may represent a structural orientation of a working portion relative to another portion or axis of the tool, an operational orientation of the working portion relative to the target material or surface, or both. The structural and operational engagement angles need not be identical. An engagement angle may be approximately zero degrees, such as when the working portion or an associated reference surface is substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis or other reference feature, or may be a non-zero angle, including an acute, substantially perpendicular, or obtuse angle. The engagement angle may be established by the orientation of the working portion, by variations in the height, length, shape, or orientation of individual cutting or abrading features, by the orientation at which the tool is positioned against the target material or surface, or by combinations thereof. The engagement angle may influence cutting efficiency, depth of cut, force requirements, precision, tactile feedback, debris evacuation, and the quality of a material-removal process. Engagement angles may be used with tools including, without limitation, osteoplasty tools, bone rasps, osteotomy blades, rasp blades, saw blades, milling cutters, drills, burrs, surgical cutting instruments, and other tools used for mechanical, surgical, manufacturing, or material-shaping applications.
