“Relief” refers to a feature in a mechanical component or tool that reduces material, offsets a surface, or otherwise modifies geometry to provide clearance, reduce stress concentrations, minimize friction, facilitate assembly, or improve functionality. A relief may take the form of a recess, groove, cutout, chamfer, taper, clearance area, or similar structure, or the like, that prevents unwanted contact, interference, or excessive material buildup. In the context of cutting tools, abrading tools, rasp features, or osteoplasty instruments, a relief may include a clearance angle, back-off region, or relief surface positioned adjacent to a cutting edge, rasp tooth, or working surface to control engagement, reduce drag, improve chip or debris evacuation, and extend tool life.
