“Landmark” refers to any physical or virtual structure, feature, or geometric construct on, in, or around an object or anatomical structure that may serve as a reference for positioning, orienting, translating, rotating, aligning, registering, or otherwise manipulating a second object or structure. Examples of landmarks include, without limitation, a protrusion, projection, tuberosity, cavity, void, divot, tab, extension, hook, curve, calcification, sesamoid, bone spur, concavity, or other topographical feature, or the like. Landmarks may also include geometric references such as a point, centroid, line, segment, ray, axis (e.g., a longitudinal axis), or a plane (e.g., sagittal, coronal, or transverse), whether defined directly by a structure or derived from one or more features. Landmarks further include constructed reference lines and axes derived from anatomical features, including a plumbline (PL), a first-ray axis, a mechanical axis, a midfoot axis, or the like. In the context of bones, landmarks may encompass protuberances, eminences, bony morphology, or geometric constructs derived from such features. In some embodiments, a landmark may be patient-specific (e.g., a unique anatomical feature or a derived axis of a given patient’s anatomy). Landmarks may further include measurements or quantitative relationships derived from such features or geometric constructs, such as distances, ratios, or angles (e.g., an intermetatarsal angle subtended between axes of two bones). In one embodiment, a plumbline (PL) constitutes a landmark.
