In one embodiment, where the requesting device 1326 is capable of receiving information from the data segment token in place of actual data, the read request response module 1312 includes a transmit data segment token module 1314 that transmits in the response a message to the requesting device 1326. The message includes at least the data segment identifier and the data segment length, but may also include a data segment location, at least one instance of the repeated, identical character or character string, or other pertinent information. Typically, the message does not include the actual data of the data segment, other than what is included in the data segment token.
