In a particular embodiment, the apparatus includes a read request receiver module 1308 that receives a storage request to read the data segment, a read data segment token module 1310 that reads the data segment token corresponding to the data segment requested by the storage request, and a read request response module 1312 that transmits a response to the requesting device 1326. The response is generated using the data segment token corresponding to the requested data segment.
