In one embodiment, the secure erase module 1320 overwrites the existing data each time a data segment token is stored. In another embodiment, the storage request specifically includes a request to overwrite the existing data and the secure erase module 1320 overwrites the existing data in response to the request to overwrite the existing data. In another embodiment, the secure erase module 1320 stores metadata information regarding confirmation that the existing data has been erased so that subsequent reads can indicate the erasure.
