The apparatus, in a particular embodiment, includes a read receiver module 1006 that receives a storage request to read the data segment from the storage device 150 and a read request transmission module 1008 that transmits the storage request to the storage device 150. Typically, the storage request is received from a requesting client 114, such as an external client 114, a client 114 internal to the server 112, such as an application or file server running on the server 112, etc. One of skill in the art will recognize other devices and software functioning as a requesting client 114 from which the read receiver module 1006 can receive a storage request.
