Allowing a garbage collection system, as described in the apparatus 800, to operate autonomously within the solid-state storage 110 provides a way to separate erase operations from reads, writes, and other faster operations so that the solid-state storage device 102 can operate much faster than many other solid-state storage systems or data storage devices.
