In one embodiment, the read request response module includes a transmit data segment token module that transmits in the response a message to the requesting device. The message includes at least the data segment identifier and the data segment length. The message is substantially free from data of the data segment. In another embodiment, the apparatus includes a reconstitute data segment module at the storage device that reconstitutes data of the data segment using the data segment token, and the read request response module includes a transmit data segment module that transmits the reconstituted, requested data segment.
